How Much Mobile Data Do You Need?

Most Swedish mobile users land in the 10–30 GB per month range – but video, social media and background apps can quickly use more than you expect. We show you how to calculate your actual needs in three steps and find the right plan without paying for data you never use.

Do you actually know how much data you use each month – or are you just guessing? Choosing the right plan is about understanding your real habits, not buying as much data as possible "just to be safe". Usage varies considerably between users, but most Swedish mobile users land in the 10–30 GB per month range. Need help finding the right plan? Compare mobile plans directly on Wipick.

Go through your usage step by step:

  • Open your operator's app or account page and retrieve your actual data used over the past three months – not just your included allowance.
  • Check whether you regularly hit your cap before the month is out, which signals that your plan is too small.
  • Note the difference between your Wi-Fi usage and actual mobile data – many people underestimate how little they actually use mobile data when they are at home.
  • Look for unused rolling data in your plan – a consistent surplus suggests you are paying for more than you need.

With this picture clear, you can compare plans with the right data allowance instead of guessing.

Step 1: Calculate your usage for video and social media

The biggest data drain is almost always video. Understanding exactly how much data different apps and services use is the first step towards a well-informed plan choice – and it can be calculated fairly precisely.

Follow these steps to map your video and feed usage:

  • Estimate your daily TikTok and Instagram time. Scrolling feeds for an hour a day? TikTok and Instagram Reels use an estimated 600 MB–1 GB per hour – that amounts to up to 30 GB a month from social media alone.
  • Calculate your Netflix and YouTube usage. HD streaming uses around 3 GB per hour, while 4K can reach up to 7 GB per hour. Two hours of Netflix in HD daily adds up to over 180 GB per month.
  • Include SVT Play and local streaming services. SVT Play and similar services behave roughly like Netflix in HD mode and should be counted the same way.
  • Account for the 5G effect. With a fast 5G plan, apps often automatically upgrade quality – what used to stream in SD now chooses HD or 4K without you noticing.

Music and background apps are a separate item we look at more closely in the next step.

Step 2: Add music and background apps

Once you know what video and social media use, it is time to look at the consumers that often slip by unnoticed. Music, syncing and maps can together eat up several gigabytes a month without you realising.

Here is how to calculate it:

  • Check your Spotify quality setting. On "Very High" quality, Spotify uses around 150 MB per hour, compared to 40 MB on "Normal". Listening for an hour a day means the difference between ~4 GB and 1 GB per month.
  • Turn off automatic syncing for iCloud, Google Photos and similar services when you are not on Wi-Fi. Photo backups can easily send 500 MB–2 GB in the background without warning.
  • Estimate map usage if you commute. GPS navigation typically uses 5–20 MB per hour, but traffic data loads continuously in the background.
  • Check email and news feeds – apps that fetch content automatically every ten minutes can add up to 200–400 MB per month.
  • Be especially aware with 5G. Faster loading encourages higher consumption, as apps automatically choose better quality and pre-load more content.

Rule of thumb: Add 3–5 GB per month for music, syncing and maps on top of your video usage. If you have a 5G plan, the figure may be even higher.

Step 3: Match your usage to the right plan level

Now that you have added up what video, social media, music and background apps use each month, it is time to turn that number into a concrete plan.

  • Light user (under 10 GB). Mostly on Wi-Fi, limited video streaming and no long streaming sessions on mobile. A cheap basic plan is more than enough.
  • Standard user (20–40 GB). Daily social media scrolling, music streaming and occasional video watching fits this level. HD quality uses 3 GB per hour, which can quickly push you out of the light category.
  • Heavy user (100 GB+ or unlimited). Frequent streaming, mobile hotspot and 5G browsing belong here.

How to proceed:

  1. Write down your monthly average and round up by 15–20% as a buffer for unexpected peaks.
  2. Compare plans in your category on Wipick – filter directly by your GB level to avoid paying for data you never use.
  3. Check whether a family plan reduces costs further – if there are multiple people in your household, a shared plan can give a lower average price per person than separate plans.

How to maintain the saving over time

Now that you know how video, social media and music affect your usage, it is time to turn that knowledge into concrete habits. Follow these steps to never overpay again:

  • Review your actual usage every six months via your operator's app, as apps update and data habits change over time.
  • Avoid "unlimited data" if you consistently use under 50 GB – you are paying for capacity you never use.
  • Compare independently via Wipick to avoid loyalty traps with hidden price increases – we aggregate real-time offers from different Swedish operators.
  • Switch plans directly – the process takes under ten minutes. Read our guide on how to switch mobile operator to do it right the first time.

The right data allowance is not the largest – it is the one that matches your actual behaviour. Do a quick comparison on Wipick today and secure a plan that genuinely suits you, whether you are a student on a tight budget or a heavy user.
