What Is Number Portability?

Number portability means that you have the legal right to keep your phone number when switching mobile operators. It does not matter how long you have had the number or which operator you currently use – the right always applies.

The regulations are established by the Swedish Post and Telecom Authority (PTS) and apply to all mobile operators in Sweden, including Tele2, Telenor, Tre, Hallon, Vimla, Fello, Comviq, Tellus, Lyca Mobile, and Chilli Mobil.

This means there is never a reason to stay with a poor operator simply because you want to keep your number. Your number follows you.


How Does Number Transfer Work?

The process is much easier than many people think and is mostly handled automatically when you sign up with a new operator.

Step 1: Choose a New Mobile Plan

Select your new operator and subscription. During signup, you simply indicate that you want to transfer your existing phone number. You usually need to provide:

  • Your current mobile number
  • Your current operator
  • Your personal identity number for verification

Step 2: The New Operator Requests the Transfer

Your new operator sends a portability request to your current provider. In most cases, you do not need to do anything further – the operators handle the communication between themselves.

Step 3: A Transfer Date Is Scheduled

How Long Does Number Transfer Take?

The full process usually takes between 3–10 business days from signup until the transfer is complete. If you choose an eSIM subscription, the process may be faster since no physical SIM card needs to be delivered.

During the waiting period, your old subscription and phone number remain fully active.


Does It Cost Anything to Transfer Your Number?

No. Number portability is completely free, and operators are not allowed to charge for the transfer itself. The only potential cost occurs if you still have an active contract with binding terms and decide to cancel it early.
