Which mobile broadband suits you? Guide to 4G, 5G and the right subscription 2026

Mobile broadband suits different needs depending on where you live, how much data you use and whether you want a contract or not. We cover the differences between 4G and 5G, which network has the best coverage at your address and how to choose the right plan in 2026.

Which mobile broadband suits you? Guide to 4G, 5G and the right subscription 2026

The range of mobile broadband subscriptions is larger than ever. More operators, more speed options and more ways to buy have made it harder to know what you actually need to pay for and what is unnecessary.

There is no universal solution. A single person working from home has entirely different needs than a family of four streaming on multiple devices or a cabin owner who only needs internet for a few months a year. The right subscription is about matching your actual habits with the right network, the right data allowance and the right terms.

This guide helps you understand the differences between 4G and 5G, what coverage actually means in practice, when you need a router and how to choose an operator based on where you live and how you use the internet.

Last updated: May 2026

What is mobile broadband and when does it suit you?

Mobile broadband is internet via the mobile network, delivered through a SIM card in a router, tablet or USB modem. Unlike a mobile phone plan, it is optimised for data consumption rather than calls and texts, and typically offers larger data allowances.

Mobile broadband works well in four situations.

You live in a home where fibre is not available. This applies primarily in rural areas, older properties or areas where fibre rollout has not yet reached.

You want a flexible option without installation. Mobile broadband requires no engineer, no cables and no waiting time. You insert the SIM card and are online within minutes.

You need internet in more places than just home. With a mobile router you can bring the connection to your summer cabin, when travelling or to the office.

You want a backup or complement to existing broadband. For example as a fallback if your fibre connection goes down or to cover a specific room in your home with weak WiFi signal.

4G or 5G – what is the difference in practice?

It is easy to assume that 5G is automatically better for everyone. In theory that is true, but in practice it depends entirely on where you are.

4G5G
Typical speed20 to 150 Mbit/s100 to 1,000 Mbit/s
Coverage99% of the populationCities and urban areas
Latency20 to 50 ms5 to 15 ms
Best suited forMost households and cabinsHome use near cities, gaming, 4K streaming
PriceLowerSlightly higher

For regular browsing, HD streaming and video calls, most people notice no difference between a good 4G network and 5G. The difference shows mainly when downloading large files, streaming 4K on multiple devices simultaneously or playing online games where low latency matters.

What matters most is not which technology you choose but how strong the signal is at your specific address. A weak 5G network can perform worse than a strong 4G network. Always check coverage with each operator before signing up.

Which network has the best coverage where you live?

Sweden has four own mobile networks. All operators offering mobile broadband use one of these networks, either as the network owner or as a virtual operator.

NetworkPopulation coverageStrengthVirtual operators
Telia99.9%Best national coverage, strongest in rural areas and northern SwedenFello, Halebop
Telenor99.9%Strong nationwide, best international roaming termsVimla
Tele299%Nationwide 5G, strong in southern SwedenComviq, Tellus Mobil
Tre99%Strongest in cities, weaker in rural areasHallon, Chili Mobil

If you choose a virtual operator such as Hallon, Vimla or Fello you get exactly the same network as the network owner — the difference is the price and terms, not the coverage. Hallon uses Tre's network, Vimla uses Telenor's network and Fello uses Telia's network.

If you live in a rural area or in northern Sweden, Telia's network is generally the strongest option. If you live in a city, the differences between networks are small and you can focus on price and terms instead.

How much data do you need?

The most common mistake is choosing too little data and then paying for add-ons every month. The second most common is paying for unlimited when you rarely use more than 20 GB.

UsageTypical monthly consumptionRecommended data allowance
Light browsing and email2 to 5 GB10 GB
Streaming and social media, one person10 to 20 GB20 to 30 GB
Home broadband, two to three people50 to 150 GBUnlimited
Home broadband, family with children100 to 300 GBUnlimited
Gaming and 4K streaming100 GB+Unlimited

One hour of HD streaming uses roughly 3 GB. One hour of 4K streaming uses roughly 7 GB. A video call for one hour uses roughly 1 GB. If you are unsure about your usage, choose an unlimited subscription — the price difference is often small compared to the risk of paying for extra data.

Read more in our guide on how much mobile data you need.

Router or data SIM – which suits you?

You need a router if: You want to use the internet on multiple devices at the same time, you want a dedicated WiFi network at home or at the cabin, or you want the option to connect an external antenna for a stronger signal.

A data SIM is enough if: You only need internet on one device, you already have a compatible router, or you want a cheaper and more flexible option.

Many operators include a router with the subscription in exchange for a 24-month contract. If you want freedom without a contract you usually need to buy or rent a router separately. Read more about maximising WiFi coverage in our router guide for better WiFi.

Contract or no contract?

There are clear advantages and disadvantages to both options.

With contractWithout contract
PriceLower monthly priceHigher monthly price
FlexibilityLocked in for 12 to 24 monthsCancel whenever you want
RouterOften includedBought or rented separately
Best suited forHome use, stable situationCabins, temporary needs, uncertain coverage

If you are unsure whether coverage works well at your address, we always recommend testing without a contract first. Most no-contract operators offer 14 days open purchase. Read more about what a contract means in practice in our guide on mobile plan contracts.

Three profiles – which subscription suits you?

You live outside an urban area and have no fibre Prioritise network over price. Telia has the strongest rural coverage. Choose unlimited data and a subscription with a router if you plan to use it as home broadband. Test without a contract if you are unsure about coverage.

You live in a city and want a flexible complement All four networks have good coverage in cities. Focus on price and terms. Hallon, Fello and Vimla offer affordable options without a contract and with the ability to adjust your data allowance monthly.

You need internet at your summer cabin Choose a no-contract subscription that you can activate and cancel seasonally. Check coverage carefully — rural coverage varies more than urban coverage. Read more in our guide on mobile broadband for the cabin.

Practical tips before you sign up

Check coverage at your exact address, not just your area. Coverage maps show theoretical outdoor coverage and reality can differ, especially indoors.

Choose unlimited data if you are unsure about your usage. It rarely costs much more than a limited option but gives you peace of mind.

Use the open purchase period. Most no-contract operators offer 14 days right of withdrawal. Test the subscription at your home or cabin before committing.

Check whether you can save through a bundle discount. Tele2 and Tre offer discounts if you have both a mobile plan and mobile broadband with the same operator.

Frequently asked questions about mobile broadband

Can mobile broadband replace fibre?

Yes, for many households it works excellently. With a good 5G subscription and strong coverage you can stream, work from home and have multiple devices connected without issues. Fibre is more stable and predictable, but the difference is rarely noticeable in everyday use for the average household.

Which mobile broadband is cheapest?

Hallon and Fello have subscriptions from under 100 SEK per month without a contract. Keep in mind that the lowest price does not always give the best coverage. Always compare coverage at your address against the price.

How fast is mobile broadband?

With 4G you can typically expect 20 to 150 Mbit/s. With 5G speeds can reach 100 to 1,000 Mbit/s in areas with good coverage. In practice, speed is affected by distance to the mast, number of users on the network and whether you are indoors or outdoors.

Do I need to sign a contract?

No. All operators in our comparison offer subscriptions without a contract. You pay slightly more per month but can cancel whenever you want.

Does mobile broadband work abroad?

It varies. Telenor offers up to 50 GB roaming within the EU and EEA. Most other operators restrict or exclude roaming for mobile broadband. Read more in our guide on EU roaming.
