Unlimited data on mobile plans 2026 – is it worth it?

Unlimited data on mobile plans 2026 – is it worth it?

Unlimited data is one of the most searched options on the Swedish mobile market. It is easy to understand why — no data allowance to keep track of, no risk of running out mid-month and no extra cost when you stream, navigate or work on the go.

But unlimited data is not the same with every operator. Speed restrictions, fair use policies and price differences make it worth understanding what you are actually buying before you sign up. This guide helps you navigate the market, compare the strongest options and decide whether unlimited data is actually right for you.

What does unlimited data mean in practice?

Unlimited data means your data allowance is not capped at a certain number of gigabytes per month. But there are important nuances to be aware of.

Speed restrictions Most operators offer unlimited data at different speed levels. You can choose unlimited data at 10 Mbit/s, 50 Mbit/s or full speed up to the network's capacity. Lower speed means a lower price but limits what you can do — 10 Mbit/s is enough for HD streaming but not for 4K or large downloads.

Fair use policies Some operators have built-in fair use restrictions that can reduce your speed if you use an unusually large amount of data during a period. Always read the terms carefully, especially if you plan to use your phone as a mobile hotspot for other devices.

Roaming Unlimited data usually applies fully within Sweden but is restricted abroad. Most operators include a cap for roaming within the EU and EEA, typically between 10 and 50 GB per month. Read more about what applies in our guide on EU roaming.

Type of unlimitedMeansSuited for
Unlimited at 10 Mbit/sFree data, lower speedStreaming, social media, browsing
Unlimited at 50 Mbit/sFree data, medium speedRemote work, video calls, gaming
Unlimited at full speedFree data, max network capacityEverything including 4K and hotspot

Do you actually need unlimited data?

Before choosing an unlimited plan, it is worth checking whether you actually need it. Many people pay for unlimited data without ever getting close to their previous data limit.

UsageTypical monthly consumptionNeed unlimited?
Mostly WiFi, light browsing on the go2–5 GBNo
Social media and music during commute5–15 GBNo
Streaming video daily15–30 GBMaybe
Working remotely without fixed WiFi30–80 GBYes

All of the above combined100 GB+Absolutely

If you are unsure about your actual usage, you can find it in your operator's app or in your phone settings under mobile data. Also read our guide on how much mobile data you need to work out the right data allowance.

Network owner or virtual operator — does it matter?

Sweden has four own mobile networks — Telia, Tele2, Telenor and Tre. Virtual operators such as Vimla, Hallon and Chili Mobil rent capacity in one of these networks and often offer lower prices.

If you want unlimited data via one of the four nationwide networks you generally need to sign up directly with the network owner — Telia, Tele2, Telenor or Tre. The exception is Chili Mobil which offers unlimited data on Tre's network. Virtual operators such as Vimla, Hallon, Fello and Comviq instead offer generous data packages up to 200 GB, which is enough for most people — often at a lower price than the network owners' unlimited options. Coverage is identical to the network owner's — the difference is the price, terms and data cap. Compare operators in more detail in our guide on comparing mobile operators.

Unlimited data for students and families

Students Several operators offer discounted plans with generous data for students. Fello offers double data for students, which can give up to 100 GB per month depending on the chosen package — a cost-effective option for those who do not need unlimited. If you want genuinely unlimited data as a student, Telia, Tele2, Telenor and Chili Mobil are the strongest options. Vimla and Hallon have competitive prices with large data packages and no contract, which suits students living temporarily. Read more in our guide on best mobile plans for students.

Families For families with multiple subscriptions, family plans with unlimited data can offer significant savings. Telia, Tele2 and Telenor all offer family plans where each additional subscription is cheaper. Read more in our guide on best family mobile plans or visit our family plans page.

Unlimited data as a hotspot — what applies?

Using your phone as a mobile router or hotspot to share data with a laptop or tablet is increasingly common. It is important to check whether your subscription allows this and under what conditions.

Most unlimited subscriptions allow hotspot use but may have restricted speed when sharing data. For example a subscription might offer full 5G speed for the phone's own browsing but limit hotspot speed to 10–50 Mbit/s.

Tre and Chili Mobil are generous with hotspot use. Telenor allows hotspot without restriction on their premium subscriptions. Always check the terms for the specific subscription level you choose.

Things to consider before signing up

Check the actual speed level. The cheapest unlimited option is not always the best if the speed is restricted to 10 Mbit/s.

Compare roaming terms if you travel. Telenor stands out with up to 50 GB in the EU and EEA. Most others limit to 10–25 GB.

Check whether a family plan gives a better price. If more people in your household also need unlimited data, a family plan may be more cost-effective than separate subscriptions.

Consider whether to sign a contract. Unlimited subscriptions with a contract are often cheaper per month. Read our guide on mobile plan contracts to see when it is worth it.

Switching from another operator? You always keep your number. Read our guide on transferring your mobile number and our guide on switching mobile operator to see how straightforward it is.

Frequently asked questions about unlimited data

Is unlimited data truly unlimited?

The data volume is unlimited but the speed may be restricted depending on which subscription you choose. Always read the terms for your specific subscription level and check whether fair use restrictions apply.

Which network is best for unlimited data?

It depends on where you live. Telia has the best coverage nationally and in rural areas. Telenor has strong international roaming terms. Tele2 has nationwide 5G. Tre is strongest in cities. Always check coverage at your address before choosing.

Can I use unlimited data abroad?

Within the EU and EEA, roaming is included in most subscriptions but with a cap, typically 10–50 GB per month. Outside the EU, roaming charges apply. Telenor has the most generous roaming terms among the major operators.

Is it cheaper to choose a virtual operator for unlimited data?

It depends on the operator. Chili Mobil offers unlimited data on Tre's network and is a cost-effective alternative to Tre's own subscription. Other virtual operators such as Vimla, Hallon, Fello and Comviq do not offer unlimited data but have large packages up to 200 GB — often at a lower price than the network owners' unlimited options.

What does unlimited data cost per month?

Prices start from around 149 SEK per month with Chili Mobil at restricted speed. With the network owners Tele2, Telenor and Telia, unlimited subscriptions range from 379 to 599 SEK per month depending on package and contract length. Check current campaign prices at Wipick.
