Electricity Support 2026 – How Much Will You Receive and When Will the Money Be Paid Out?

The Swedish government's new electricity support scheme for the winter's high electricity prices will begin paying out in June 2026 – automatically and without the need to apply. Here's how much you'll receive by electricity zone, the consumption cap, and what you need to do.

Electricity Support 2026 – how much you get and when it's paid out

The electricity support for the winter's high electricity prices starts being paid out in early June 2026. It happens automatically – you don't need to apply – and most households are expected to receive the money before Midsummer. The support covers electricity used during January and February 2026 and applies across the whole country.

After a winter of strained electricity bills, the government has decided on a new temporary electricity support for Swedish households. The aim is to compensate for the increased electricity costs during the first months of the year, and the payments arrive as a one-time sum – not as a discount on future invoices.

Who gets the electricity support?

The support goes to private individuals who had a grid contract on 28 February 2026. It's the person named on the grid subscription who receives the money – regardless of who actually paid the bills.

All electricity price areas in Sweden (SE1–SE4) are covered, but companies are not. If you live in a home where electricity is included in the rent, or where the housing cooperative has a shared electricity contract (so-called IMD), you normally won't receive the support yourself – because you're not named on your own grid contract.

Which period does the support cover?

The calculation is based on the electricity you consumed during January and February 2026. In other words, it's a retroactive compensation for electricity already used, and it doesn't affect your future electricity bills.

How much you can get

The amount is determined by two things: how much electricity you used during the two months and which price area you live in. The compensation per kilowatt-hour looks like this:

Price areaCompensationCompare plans
SE1 (north)14 öre/kWhSee plans in SE1
SE2 (upper central)14 öre/kWhSee plans in SE2
SE3 (lower central)26 öre/kWhSee plans in SE3
SE4 (south)29 öre/kWhSee plans in SE4

Because electricity prices have generally been higher in southern Sweden, households in SE3 and SE4 receive more per kilowatt-hour used. If you want to understand why prices differ so much between north and south, we've covered it in the guide on what affects electricity prices.

Worked example: A household in SE3 that used 4,000 kWh during January and February gets around SEK 1,040. The same consumption in SE4 gives roughly SEK 1,160.

Is there a cap?

Yes. Electricity support can be paid out for up to 10,000 kWh per home during the support period. For most households, that means their entire consumption is covered.

Do you have to apply?

No. The grid companies report data on households' electricity usage to the authorities, and Försäkringskassan (the Swedish Social Insurance Agency) calculates the amount and handles the payments.

To get the money as quickly as possible, you should have a payment account registered with Försäkringskassan. If no account is registered, the money is normally sent via payment notice (utbetalningsavi), which takes longer.

When will the money arrive?

Under the decision, payments are due to start in June 2026, and Försäkringskassan has stated that most households will receive the money before Midsummer.

Can you get support for multiple homes?

Yes. There's no limit on the number of homes, as long as you were named on each grid contract on 28 February 2026.

Electricity support and the high-cost protection – not the same thing

Many people confuse the two. The 2026 electricity support is a temporary measure tied to a specific period and your actual consumption in January–February. The high-cost protection (högkostnadsskydd) is a separate system designed to compensate when electricity prices become exceptionally high. The reduced electricity tax and previously decided support continue to apply in parallel.

What does this mean for your electricity costs going forward?

The electricity support is a welcome one-off – but it's just that, a one-time sum. What actually decides your electricity bill for the rest of 2026 is which electricity plan you have: your spot price, markup and monthly fee.

Given the electricity price forecast for autumn and winter 2026, it may be worth reviewing your plan now. A few concrete steps:
