How to save money on your mobile plan
Paying too much for your phone? We go through the most effective ways to cut the cost of your mobile plan – without compromising on coverage or data.
Photo source: UnsplashMost people in Sweden pay more than they need to for their mobile plan – not because they chose wrong once, but because they never reviewed the contract again. Operators' business models rely partly on exactly that: that you stay out of habit while the price slowly creeps up. The good news is that it rarely takes more than a minute and a couple of smart decisions to cut the monthly cost considerably.
Here we go through the most effective ways to lower the cost of your mobile plan – without compromising on coverage or data. Want to jump straight to the prices? You can compare mobile plans at Wipick at any time.
Stop paying the full price
The most common mistake is to keep paying after a campaign period ends. When the introductory price expires, the monthly cost often jumps to a "standard" level that's considerably higher – and operators count on you not noticing. So set a reminder for when your campaign or fixed term ends, and review the contract right away. Comparing once a year is the single biggest saving for most people.
Take advantage of new-customer discounts
The lowest prices on the market are almost always reserved for new customers. Operators often offer a hefty discount during the first few months to win you over. That means anyone willing to switch at regular intervals can almost always sit on a campaign price rather than a standard one. Loyalty is rarely rewarded in telecom – mobility is.
Only pay for the data you actually use
One of the most common ways to throw money away is paying for unlimited data when you in practice use a fraction of it. Check your actual usage in the operator's app over the past few months and match the plan to it. Many get by comfortably on a medium-sized data package, and the difference up to "unlimited" quickly becomes an unnecessary monthly cost. Our guide on how much data you need helps you find the right level, and if you're wondering whether it's worth it you can read when unlimited data actually pays off. You can also filter by data allowance directly when you compare mobile plans.
Choose a low-cost operator on the same network
This is perhaps the best-kept secret: you can get the big operators' coverage for a fraction of the price. Sweden essentially has four mobile networks – Telia, Tele2, Telenor and Tre – and the smaller operators rent space on exactly those networks. So you get the same coverage and 5G speed, but at a price set to compete.
A few examples of how the networks connect: Fello and Halebop use Telia's network, Vimla uses Telenor's network, Comviq uses Tele2's network, and Hallon and Chilimobil use Tre's network. If you want to see how the networks and operators stack up against each other, we have a guide where we compare mobile operators, and a direct comparison of two popular low-cost options in Vimla vs Hallon. Three of our current favourites are built on exactly this logic – read more in our reviews of Vimla, Fello and Hallon.
Drop the fixed term
A plan with no fixed term rarely costs more in practice, but gives you the freedom to switch as soon as a better campaign appears. It's precisely that flexibility that lets you keep surfing on new-customer prices instead of being stuck on a standard price for a year or two. If you want to read more about how the terms work, we have a guide on contract vs no contract, and if you want to go all the way you can look at mobile plans with no contract.
Separate the phone from the plan
Bundling an expensive phone with the plan can feel convenient, but it often locks you into a longer and more expensive contract. For many it's cheaper – and more flexible – to keep your current phone or buy it separately, and take a pure SIM-only plan that you can switch freely. Always work out the total cost over the whole period before choosing a package with a phone, so you can see what actually pays off.
Pool the family or several SIM cards
If there are several of you in the household, family plans or several SIM cards on the same account usually give a discount per extra card compared with separate plans. It's often one of the easiest savings for a family, since you lower the average cost per person without anyone having to compromise on their data. Read more in our guide on family mobile plans 2026, or compare directly among family plans. If you're a student or a senior, there are also dedicated categories for student plans and senior plans that often have special prices.
Watch out for hidden fees and billing methods
Small fees quietly eat up the saving. Paper invoices and certain payment methods can cost extra every month – choose e-invoice or direct debit where possible. Also read the fine print on setup and activation fees when you sign up, so that a low monthly price isn't eaten up by one-off costs.
Don't let saved data go to waste
Some operators let unused data roll over to the next month, others reset it. If you choose a plan where the data is saved, you get more for your money and can often pick a smaller, cheaper package without risking running out at the end of the month.
Keep an eye on data abroad
If you travel within the EU/EEA, data is included on the same terms as at home thanks to the EU roaming rules – but there's often a cap on how much of your data allowance you can use abroad, and outside the EU the costs can spiral. If you travel a lot, it's worth choosing a plan with generous roaming terms rather than paying a premium per megabyte on the trip. We go through the rules in our guide on EU roaming.
How to get started
Most of this takes just a few minutes to act on. Start by checking your actual data usage, note when your current campaign or fixed term ends, and then compare the market based on the right data allowance and the right network.

Frequently asked questions
How much can I save by switching mobile plan?
It depends on what you pay today, but anyone who's been sitting on a standard price after an expired campaign can often cut their monthly cost considerably by switching to a new-customer offer at the right data level. The biggest saving almost always comes from actually comparing and switching, not from negotiating on the same contract.
Is it complicated to switch operator?
No. Your new operator handles the whole process. Through number porting, your mobile number is transferred automatically and your old plan is cancelled in connection with the switch. The only thing you need to check is that you don't have any fixed term left. We explain step by step in our guides on switching mobile operator and transferring your mobile number.
Will I get worse coverage with a low-cost operator?
No. The smaller operators rent space on the same four networks as the big operators, so you get the same coverage and 5G speed – the difference is in the price, not the network.
How much data do I need?
Most people use less than they think. Check your usage over the past few months in the operator's app and choose a package with a little margin. Paying for unlimited data only pays off if you actually use large amounts of data every month.
How often should I review my mobile plan?
At least once a year, and always when a campaign period ends. Prices and offers change continuously, so a quick comparison now and then is what keeps the cost down over time.
